An almost full Kings Tavern saw Ross Gonsalves from hockey named as the old Edwardian Sportsman of the year 2017. Ross was a member of the 1st hockey team and also represented Southern Gauteng B at the inter provincial. He then played for the Derwent Strikers one of the top teams in Tasmania in the Australian league where he won a number of Man of the Match awards as well as scoring many goals.
IIn all there were six nominees for the award and they were Eleni Artemides (ladies hockey), Berne Burger (hockey), Josh Datnow (cricket), Catherine van Eyk (ladies hockey) and Anthony Woodhouse (hockey) who was named as runner up.
Mike Dunk acted as Master of Ceremonies and he outlined how sport in South Africa had changed over the years and at times this was to the detriment of clubs such as ours. Top players were now taken straight into the Provincial set up and are seldom if ever available for their club. So change was necessary to keep pace with these developments. One such change was to introduce a new category at the awards and this was the Presidents Bowl which is for those who have excelled at officiating in their sport at either club, provincial, National or International level.  The first recipient of this award was Gus Pinker from water polo.
