IT WAS A FANTASTIC ROAD RACE
08 August 2017

Without doubt this years road race was "simply the best" to quote Tina Turner.

With Discovery Vitality and Land Rover coming on board to sponsor the event the entries were at an all time high with all races "sold out" days before the race day. In all 6500 runners lines up for the three races. The weather was perfect and the organization ran like a well oiled machine. The odd change from previous years like the finishing position being moved slightly gave the spectators a better view of the runners coming up to the line and with so many other activities going on around the race day itself plus the colourful tents of a lot of the running clubs participating, it gave a carnival atmosphere to the whole day.

In the 10km event it was KPMG who literally ran away with the honours. In the mens race Kabelo Mulamo took the lead at the 6km mark but he was pressed all the way by the Royal Bofekeng runner Jeremiah Moshwetsi as the two came onto the field no more than 15 meters apart. Mulamo finished in 31;38 with Moshwetsi 31;45. Rocky Road Runners Kemane Khunonyaeni was third in 33;28.

In the ladies race Reneilwe Sesing made it a double for KGMG when she led all the way to finish in 39;46 two minutes ahead of Refilwe Molefu with Kate Reed (Born 2 Run) third in 45;59.

In the 21km race again it was the turn of Nedbank to dominate the winners rostrum. In the mens race Tsdtang Maine was barely clear when he entered the field ahead of Rocky Road Runners Puleng Mayego but his speed over the last lap on the grass saw him finish in 1;08;34 seven seconds ahead with Derocious Makobanen third in 1;11;08.

It was in the ladies race that the winner had matters under control the whole way round the two lap course. Mamorolo Choko (Nedbank) finished way ahead of her rivals in 1;19;41eight minutes ahead of Kim Norton (Rocky Road Runners) with Maria Vilakazi third in 1;30;38.

It will go down as one of the most memorable days in the history of the Society such was the success of the whole event.
